Old-World Anchor in Pasig's Center
Pasig Cathedral, established in 1573, is one of the oldest structures in Pasig and serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pasig. The cathedral features a beautiful neoclassical facade and a historic bell tower that has witnessed centuries of local history, including the British occupation of Manila. Honestly, visiting the cathedral and walking around the nearby Plaza Rizal gives you a rare glimpse of old-world charm in the middle of Pasig's modern urban sprawl.
The cathedral interior is spacious and beautifully decorated, and it gets incredibly packed during Sunday mass and holidays. After visiting, you can explore the surrounding historic streets, which feature some heritage houses and old local eateries serving traditional PasigueƱo dishes. It's a key anchor for the city's cultural heritage, and locals are very protective of it.
Navigating Pasig's One-Way Road Grid
Getting here by public transit is a bit of a challenge due to Pasig's congested road network. You can take a UV Express or a jeepney from Shaw Boulevard (Crossing) or MRT-3 Shaw Station bound for Pasig Palengke. The ride takes you through the busy streets of Shaw and Pasig Boulevard, which are prone to heavy traffic during rush hour. Tricycles are the main way to get around the narrow streets near the plaza, but be prepared for loud traffic and tight fits. If you're driving, parking is extremely difficult to find, so transit or Grab is your best bet.
