Daranak Falls is a natural waterfall park in Tanay, Rizal, located near Calinawan Cave. It is one of the most accessible nature getaways from Manila, featuring a 14-meter-high waterfall dropping into a wide, green pool of cold mountain water. If you want to escape the dry heat of the city without driving for half a day, this Tanay spot is pretty hard to beat, although you will have to share it with a crowd if you visit on a Sunday.

  • Exact Barangay/City: Barangay Plaza Aldea, Tanay, Rizal
  • Best For: Swimming, family picnics, and quick day trips
  • Average Spend: ₱150 - ₱400 per person
  • Power Outlets & Wi-Fi: No power outlets or public Wi-Fi available around the falls. Mobile signal is intermittent and drops completely in certain spots near the rock walls.

Swimming and Picnic Etiquette

The water is cold and refreshing, especially after walking under the sun. You can rent a wooden picnic table or a small cottage nearby to leave your things. Be warned that the main pool can get quite deep near the falls, and the rocks are coated in slippery moss. Lifeguards are on duty, but you should still exercise caution, especially if you are swimming with kids. You are allowed to bring your own food, which is great because the local food stalls inside the park have very limited options. Just make sure to clean up after yourselves; they are quite strict about trash to keep the river clean.

Navigating the Rizal Commuter Route

Getting to Tanay via public transport is an experience in itself. You can find UV Express vans or jeepneys in Starmall Shaw Boulevard or Cubao that travel directly to Tanay town proper. The journey through the winding roads of Marcos Highway takes about two hours, and you will likely get a bit dizzy if you are prone to motion sickness. Once you reach the Tanay public market, transfer to a jeepney bound for Sampaloc and ask the driver to let you off at the intersection leading to Daranak. From there, you will have to ride a tricycle for the last stretch of dirt road. It is a dusty ride, and during the hot dry season, you will arrive covered in a thin layer of grime, making the cold splash of the falls even more satisfying.
