A Glimpse of Batangas Heritage
If you are tired of the malls in Manila and want a quick weekend escape, Taal town is a great choice. The basilica itself is huge. When you stand inside, the high ceilings and the silver tabernacle make you feel tiny. Honestly, the baroque design is spectacular, and you can even climb up the bell tower for a small fee. Just a heads up, the stairs leading to the belfry are extremely narrow and steep. If you're claustrophobic or not used to tight spaces, you might want to skip the climb. But the view of Balayan Bay and the surrounding heritage houses from the top is absolutely worth the effort.
Taal town has managed to preserve its Spanish-era ancestral houses, so walking around the church feels like stepping back in time. You can grab lunch at one of the ancestral home restaurants nearby. Don't forget to try the local Batangas lomi or buy a fan knife (balisong) as a souvenir from the shops down the street. The locals are very friendly, though they speak with a very heavy Batangueño accent that might sound intimidating at first. But they are always ready to help you with directions.
Commuting from Manila: SLEX and STAR Tollway
Getting here from Manila is a bit of a journey, but it's pretty straightforward. You need to board a bus from the Jam Liner or DLTB terminals in LRT Buendia or Cubao that is bound for Lemery. The bus will take SLEX and then transition to the STAR Tollway. Depending on the traffic situation near Lipa and the narrow roads of Cuenca, the trip can take anywhere from three to four hours. So, it's best to leave early in the morning, around 5 AM, to avoid the worst of the SLEX rush. Once the bus drops you off at the Taal town plaza, you can just walk up the hill to the basilica. If you are bringing a car, parking around the narrow streets of the plaza can be quite tricky, so taking public transit is actually a solid option.
