Thrilla In Manila
A prominent destination in the Culture scene.
The Thrilla in Manila is a historic boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City, located near the Gateway Mall and the MRT-3 Cubao Station. Staged on October 1, 1975, this legendary heavyweight championship bout is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most brutal boxing matches in sports history.

Navigating Cubao's Transit Hub
Commuting to the historic site today is an adventure in navigating one of Quezon City's busiest transit hubs. You can easily reach the coliseum by taking the MRT-3 or the LRT-2, which both connect to the Araneta Center-Cubao Station. However, changing lines or walking through the malls during the EDSA rush hour is a massive struggle because of the sheer volume of commuters rushing home. The jeepney terminals along Aurora Boulevard and the tricycle terminals nearby add to the chaotic mix, making crossing the street feel like an extreme sport. If you plan to drive, parking inside Gateway Mall or the open-air parking lots around the Araneta Coliseum can get very expensive, and traffic on EDSA and Aurora Boulevard is usually at a standstill on weekend nights.
The Legacy of the Fight
The match itself was the final showdown of the Ali-Frazier trilogy, ending when Frazier's corner stopped the fight before the 15th round. The event put the Philippines on the global map, with President Ferdinand Marcos sponsoring the bout to distract from local political tensions. Today, when you visit the Araneta Coliseum, you're standing inside the very same dome where that brutal fight took place. The surrounding Araneta City has since transformed into a massive commercial hub, but the coliseum remains an iconic monument to this legendary athletic clash. Don't forget to check out the boxing memorabilia and historical photos displayed inside the Gateway Mall passage.
