The Academic Oval and Jeepney Culture

Honestly, UP Diliman is one of the very few places left in Metro Manila where you can actually breathe clean air and see giant acacia trees. The heart of the campus is the Academic Oval, which is closed to motorized traffic on Sundays so people can jog, bike, and walk their dogs without worrying about cars. Commuting around the campus is an art form. You have to learn the difference between the "Ikot" jeepney (green roof, goes around the campus) and the "Toki" jeepney (olive green, goes counter-clockwise and visits the college buildings on the outskirts). If you're coming from the MRT, you'll probably take an "UP-Philcoa" jeepney from North Avenue or Quezon Ave station. It can get pretty hot during the summer, but once you enter the campus, the temperature drops noticeably.

Student Hangouts and Late-Night Study Spots

So, when the academic pressure gets too intense, students gather at the Sunken Garden to just lie on the grass and look at the sky. Anyway, if you're looking to get some work done, the libraries are the default option, but they can get incredibly crowded during finals week. Just a heads up: some of the older college buildings don't have air-conditioned study areas, so you might end up sweating over your readings. If you want a more commercial setting, you can walk or take a tricycle to UP Town Center along Katipunan Avenue, where you'll find plenty of cafes with high-speed internet and power outlets. But for the authentic UP experience, nothing beats studying on a concrete bench under a tree with a cup of taho in hand.

The Legendary UP Street Food

You cannot visit UP Diliman without trying the food. We're not talking about fancy restaurants, but the street vendors parked near the Oval or the Area 2 food hub. Area 2 is basically a street lined with residential houses turned into student diners, serving cheap meals like sizzling sisig, home-cooked adobo, and pancit canton. Then there’s the famous "dirty ice cream" (sorbetes) and the fried street food carts where you can eat fishballs, squid balls, and tempura. It's incredibly cheap, and it's the fuel that keeps thousands of students awake during their midnight study marathons.
